About Heroin Addiction

Heroin is a derivative of morphine, an opioid. It is an extremely addictive illegal depressant. In fact, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) suggests that approximately 23 percent of heroin users become dependent upon the drug. Other NIDA statistics reveal that the number of heroin users in the US has escalated, nearly doubling in just the seven year period from 2005 to 2012 (increasing from 380,000 to 670,000).

Heroin rapidly accesses and binds to proteins that function as opioid receptors on cells in many areas of the brain, especially in regions involved in feelings of pain and pleasure. Other opioid receptors, located in the brain stem, control processes including breathing, blood pressure, and arousal. The opioid medications are attractive to users due to their effectiveness in generating a sense of pleasure and well-being by affecting these brain regions involved in feelings of reward.

Various forms of heroin: White or brown powder, or black substance (like tar).

Methods of use: Heroin can be used by injecting, smoking, swallowing, or snorting it. The rate at which heroin connects with opioid receptors in the brain depends upon the method used to take the drug.

Common names for heroin: Heroin has many street names, including Smack, Junk, Horse, Black tar, Skag, Dope, Big H, Brown Sugar. Frequently, heroin is mixed with other substances, such as quinine sugar, starch, or even certain types of poison to enhance the drug’s effects.

Health Consequences of Heroin Use

Long-term use of heroin can lead to severe health effects, including one or more of the following kinds of diseases, organ damage, or other complications.

  • Damage to heart, heart lining, heart valves
  • Damage to veins, and arteries
  • Slowed breathing
  • Infections or abscesses (swollen, pus-filled tissue)
  • Kidney disease
  • Impeded brain production of chemicals signaling pleasure
  • Reduced brain cells
  • Sleep problems
  • Stomach cramps, constipation
  • Liver disease
  • Lung problems, including forms of pneumonia
  • Infectious diseases (HIV, Hepatitis, or others)
  • Death

Heroin Addiction Treatment Process

A universal approach to heroin addiction treatment does not work for all individuals struggling with heroin addiction. At Pathways, each patient works with therapists, counselors, and other specialists to create a unique treatment program to meet individual needs and goals. Treatment may include the following.

  • Detox: Medically managed detoxification is the first stage of treatment for recovery from Heroin addiction. Professional detox practitioners, with medical assistance, employ specially formulated medication therapies to simulate some effects of heroin. The medications do not cause patients who have a history of heroin use to experience a sense of altered consciousness or feeling of being high. The medication treatment is utilized during detox to facilitate the process by helping patients feel focused, strong and healthy. The medications are decreased until the patient is no longer taking any replacement medication.
  • Outpatient treatment: Treatment may be intensive outpatient in the beginning. Patients may attend multiple weekly outpatient treatment sessions. After completing the more intensive treatment, out-patients may then transition into a more regular routine of treatments. This involves meeting less frequently and for fewer hours weekly and is focused on helping sustain recovery.
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy: This part of addiction therapy aims at helping a patient first recognize situations in which people in recovery are most likely to become motivated to use drugs, and then learn ways to avoid and cope with those circumstances.
  • Multidimensional family therapy: For an adolescent who uses heroin, and for his or her family, this form of therapy can be exceptionally useful to address a range of potential influences on the pattern of drug abuse. The therapy is designed to help improve the family’s overall functioning.
  • Motivational interviewing: This treatment is designed to help patients make the very most of their readiness to change their behavior, and to get treatment.
  • Contingency management: Motivational incentives are employed in this kind of treatment to provide positive reinforcement of the patient’s recovery efforts and to encourage maintaining abstinence from drugs.
  • Long-term relapse prevention: Continuing preventive treatment is essential to staying drug-free over the long term. Near the completion of treatment, a Pathways exit counselor will work side-by-side with you to develop your own plan for relapse prevention, with a schedule to help you maintain your success. And, Pathways provides support by following up with you for three years after you leave treatment. Read 7 Relapse Prevention Tips Here.

Principles of Successful Heroin Addiction Recovery

Heroin addiction can severely impact brain functioning and behavior. The disease is complex, but it can be successfully treated. It is not necessary for treatment to be voluntary for it to be effective. The most common forms of treatment include counseling, along with other behavioral therapies. Frequently, medications are important for treatment, in conjunction with behavioral therapies. Successful treatment requires acting on the following principles.

  • People need ready access to treatment.
  • Treatment must be individualized to address each patient’s unique needs.
  • Treatment must attend to all needs of the patient, not focus only on the drug use issue.
  • Continuous monitoring of drug use must be maintained during treatment.
  • As patient’s needs change throughout treatment, the individual plan must be frequently reviewed and modified.
  • The patient must stay in treatment for a sufficient length of time.

NOTE: Treatment should examine the possibility of other mental disorders that may exist.

Additionally, because heroin is an opioid typically taken by intravenous injection, it is linked to transmission of communicable diseases such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B and C, and Tuberculosis. Therefore, the treatment program should test addiction patients for these, among other infectious diseases.

Patients should be educated on steps to reduce their risks of contracting these and other blood-borne diseases that can occur as consequences of sharing contaminated needles and other drug paraphernalia, and from high-risk sexual behavior. This education is necessary, as drug abuse can significantly contribute to the potential for these behaviors.

Pathways Objectives

The aim of Pathways treatment professionals is to help our clients become free from a sense of shame or guilt that can promote continual self-damaging cycles. Our purpose is to help individuals suffering in addiction accept their need for a real and lasting solution and to provide them with the necessary opportunities to change the way they’re living. We treat our patients with the love, dignity, and respect that conveys our most basic beliefs as individuals who care about helping other people.

If you need help in overcoming heroin addiction contact the Pathways Real Life Recovery heroin rehab center in Utah at (801) 895-3006.

You do not have to try to go through the recovery process alone. We are here to help you. Pathways professionals treat heroin addiction first by managing the physical withdrawal for you. And, then we work through the full recovery process with you to address the issues behind heroin addiction.

The explanation for Pathways’ success is that we understand that each person is an individual. We know it doesn’t work to just treat the symptoms of addiction. Our highly skilled professional team provides you with opportunities and tools to discover the deeper personal causes of your addiction. We work with you to examine motives for actions, to develop inner-forgiveness, and to understand the underlying issues leading to destructive behaviors.

Pathways’ outpatient programs go beyond drug addiction to help our clients gain control over other personal challenges, such as co-occurring disorders, marital difficulties, addiction to pornography, and other problems. Our strong focus is on helping our patients gain robust confidence and personal tools for maintaining a future free from heroin.

We Love Our Clients

When I arrived at Pathways, I was extremely depressed, full of anxiety, and addicted to drugs. It took some time, but now I am happy and I have tools to manage a much lower level of anxiety. I have been clean for 21 months. Pathways offers medication assisted therapy (MAT), which can help addicts be successful in staying clean. They also offer genetic testing, which helps you find out which medications are most compatible with your body, if you are in need of medication. The staff at Pathways care about clients and are willing to go the extra mile to help them. I am very grateful to Pathways for their patience with me and for giving me the tools I needed to be a happy, whole person. I am very grateful to Michelle and her staff for never giving up on me.

This program changed my life- Michelle is so committed to helping others and making change happen. I remember when I needed help she was there for my family and I answering 3am phone calls talking us through everything. She has a heart of gold and the staff here is so supportive. Definitely the dream team I needed to help me grow into the person I am today. I was in treatment for a year, but oh was it so worth it! I still use and practice my affirmations to this day. It’s such a powerful thing being able to apply everything you learn at Pathways into your daily life. Even though life doesn’t get easier, you can learn how to cope and manage your way through it. 💛

💚💚💚Pathways wholeness Center is undoubtedly a divinely built and Powerful program that shifted my belief system and overall quality of life.Throughout my life I have experienced sexual abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, and deep negative belief systems. Although on the surface I had great success in life, I have never felt whole and healthy until working with Michelle and the amazing staff at pathways.Rather than just putting a bandaid on the surface to cover the cause of my trauma/addiction, Pathways worked on the core cause of the trauma, while healing problems from the inside out. The philosophy and execution of this program is absolutely life-changing.The facility is very clean and nice. They provide great nutritious meals and comfortable living conditions. Lots of fun hiking trips, and social interaction while learning to have joy without using drugs or alcohol. The staff is second to none, full of love and willing to help however they can.If you are considering a better life away from the prison of addiction and or mental disorders, this is the best of the best!!!!💚💚💚💚

I came to Pathways to get help with severe anxiety and depression. I had tried medication after medication, therapy, ketamine treatments, exercise, and diet changes but I still heavily struggled to get myself to do the most basic of human tasks. With the help and unconditional support of staff and mutual clients, I was able to build a foundation of self love and hope. They focus not on what’s wrong with you, but on what’s good. They teach you that everyone is already happy and whole and they work with you individually and in a group setting to help you start believing it. I can’t explain how safe and comforted I feel with this facility and all the incredible staff. Inpatient is warm and welcoming, the beds are amazing, and food is great. Outpatient is welcoming and so incredibly helpful. Everyone is ridiculously patient with you and your struggles/needs. I highly recommend this to anyone struggling with mental health or addiction.

I have been amazed at the difference Pathways has made in the life of my son. I researched several centers and everything was about the money until I talked to Michelle. I could genuinely feel her concern from our first phone call. I have seldom found someone so committed to making a difference. She allowed my son to stay even when we were still trying to work out insurance. She said, "I want to do things the right way." Michelle has kept all of her promises to my son and allowed him to trust again. Michelle, Katrina, Wendy and the rest of the team never gave up through some very difficult moments. We finally have a diagnosis which is allowing us to move forward with a plan. The genuine love given freely at Pathways is giving my son back his life. We will be forever grateful.

Pathways has been an amazing program for me. I travelled from out of state to participate in the program and it was worth every mile of red-eye travel. It took me a few weeks to really be open to the style of treatment they provide, however, the patience and understanding allowed me to truly find my authentic self and begin the process to heal from my trauma. I enjoyed the fitness recreation part of the program that encourages a healthy body for a health mental well being. Our bodies require a healthy hygiene routine, so our mental wellness also requires a proper routine to maintain healthy “mental hygiene.”

Michelle and the team at Pathways are a godsend. My husband has been struggling with a serious mental illness for over a decade which eventually led to dangerous self medication. Life became unmanageable. Five years ago, he recognized he needed help, and has been to countless (10+) treatment centers since. Before checking into Pathways, he was inpatient at Odyssey House and sober for 5 months. While there, he was hospitalized 3 times for his mental health. We were desperate for support, but couldn't find it outside of treatment for acute mental health episodes and addiction as a primary diagnosis. Like many others, his primary diagnosis is his mental illness, and his substance abuse is a symptom of that. Pathways sees that, and treats that.Pathways is the first place he's been where he truly feels like he has the support he needs to begin his unique, individual journey to healing. Pathways treats the individual, not the label or diagnosis. They have helped my husband identify the root causes of his illness, and have helped him connect the dots, find the common threads, between his mental health and substance abuse.Their approach to treating the whole person, the individual and their loved ones, is unparalleled. They recognize the importance of love, support and connection, and invite families to be a part of the healing process.Michelle is exceptional-  extraordinarily dedicated, brilliant and connected. Her progressive approach and genuine care have given us real hope and optimism for the first time in years.Thank you, Pathways, for helping my husband become healthy and whole.

I appreciate all that Pathways has done for me. They brought me to a place where I can use my voice and stand up for myself. I worked on affirmations and realized as I kept repeating the affirmations that they became true. The belief changes changed my life. Turning a negative belief that I believed to be true because of what was told to me as a child to a positive statement gave me a chance to live my life in a healthy way. Having the opportunity at Pathways made my life better and I am grateful to have met everyone such as Michelle. Michelle gave me (and my mom) the help that I need and deserve. I feel as though Pathways saved me. I am now able to live a positive and successful life as I continue my journey. Thank you to everyone at Pathways and I appreciate all that you have done for my family and I. Katie, New Jersey

Coming into Pathways I was struggling pretty intensely and trying to really discover who I was. After being here for the last few months I've been able to gain a sense of identity and purpose that I didn't know was possible. It's fantastic to see that the staff is so invested in everyone's individual needs. Even though there are hiccups here and there - the messaging is consistent and the care is just phenomenal. I wouldn't be able to move forward as I am today without their help.

I showed up to Pathways in very bad shape. Struggling with a ~10 year addiction, I had given up on myself. Laying in my bed, tossing and turning, I called a friend and said "take me back to treatment." She didn't even tell me where she was taking me. Michelle welcomed me with open arms. "We will get you down to Glenwood, and start loving on you." That's exactly what happened. I've been to many treatment centers but Pathways showed me how to shed the identity of "I am a drug addict." I was taught how to change my thoughts. Who would have thought that gaining self awareness/self love would allow me to be more in control, more stable, worthy, good enough, and believe that I DO MATTER?! The inpatient facility in Glenwood was where my recovery began. In one group we did a belief change where the recovery staff didn't let me back down. They pushed me in a healthy way until I blurted out "if I was good enough, I wouldn't need substances to get me through my day!" I'm a 31 year old man and I cried. The next couple days I was still in shock from the massive light bulb that went off. I became aware that I was a prisoner to my thoughts. My life has been changed forever. Michelle, the OWNER, has been present throughout my entire treatment, constantly checking in with me to see where I am--mentally/physically. My own parents don't offer me the love and care that I receive from Pathways. The transition from inpatient to day treatment was perfectly timed. I am currently living in their sober house and still to this day, ALL my needs are met. I've been given the opportunity at a new life. I realized that I hit 120 days clean yesterday. I went from wanting to throw my life away to being excited about what my future holds. I still have my ups and downs, but I have this new shiny set of tools to get me through each day. I remember (day 1 of my recovery) sitting on the couch in the front office, miserable, thinking who the hell are these people?...why are they treating me so well?...if they only knew the kind of person I am...I don't deserve this love and support. Pathways treats you like the beautiful, capable human being that you are. Thank you Michelle, thank you Pathways.

We were in need of helping one of my children with addiction/anxiety problem. We personally visited a number of facilities because I felt I would get a better feel for which would be the best fit. At that time my son was in a week detox facility. When we met Michelle she was able to explain how the process would be approached, the flow from addiction through recovery process. She was straight forward explaining this is a process with phases that blend together depending on how the person is taking responsibility for their own recovery, etc. She said she wanted to go to the detox facility and meet with my son, which she did. She had told us that she would be glad to pick him up and personally drive him to the Glenwood facility and start the program if we wanted. Which she did as well. I learned Michelle has many years of experience in this field of healthcare and has developed a system so to speak that aims at the core of addictions, etc to get to the true causes of why this is happening. My son has been a challenge in that he would not participate much in the beginning at Pathways. Everyone on the Pathways team were patient with him, showed him respect and love which I can’t thank them enough for. My sons respect for Michelle, Wendy & Bev (and the rest of the staff) began growing as I could hear it in his voice when we had phone conversations. I could feel it in his hugs when we visited. He is seeing things from a different perspective now than before he entered Pathways and to me that is a direct reflection of the top of the Pathways organization. On top of all that, they helped us maneuver through the insurance process, getting that in order so the finances were addressed. We made the right decision coming to Pathways because they really love my son and know he will get even better and better. I fully recommend Michelle and the Pathways organization to anyone reading this today! Thankyou Michelle!

I am so absolutely grateful for this program: it has saved my life . The bottom line for me is I have never loved myself. I have never realized how the brain is effected by childhood trauma and abuse. I learn so much about the disease of addiction. I’ve learned so much about why I have been the way I have been my whole life . The therapists are so amazing and full of knowledge and support . I didn’t have anywhere to go from treatment and they welcomed me with open arms . The program is based on learning to love yourself so that you have the tools and confidence to make a beautiful life for yourself. I have never felt so much love and kindness in a program before . I have been trying to get clean for over a decade. This is the first time I feel solid HOPE. If I wouldn’t hav found pathways I don’t know where I would be : thank you so much Payhways for saving my life and assisting me in the recovery of a broken soul. ❤️

Pathways helped me navigate one of the most difficult life challenges I have ever experienced. This summer I made the choice to reach out for help. It was at a time when I was so desperate, scared and vulnerable. From the very first interaction, the staff at Pathways showed compassion and consideration for my situation. I never once felt judged, ashamed or unsupported. I met Michelle (the owner) the same day I called in asking for her help. Michelle took the time to meet with me and my husband despite her plans to get on a plane that afternoon. Michelle made me and my family a priority. I recently graduated from the Intensive Outpatient Program at Pathways and I will be celebrating my 5 months of sobriety tomorrow 10/2/19. Its difficult to find the words to describe my appreciation. Pathways helped me find my self worth and self love so that I no longer choose alcohol to numb out. My actions now align with my goals and values. I am certainly proud of myself today. Pathways is part of my success story. I absolutely would have reached out sooner had I known just how much it was going to help me and my family. It’s hard work, and it’s the best investment I’ve ever made in my own well-being. Thank you Pathways for everything you have done, you truly are amazing.

Pathways has been a life saver for me. I was at my lowest low when I started there. And now I am feeling better than I have in years. Great staff and clients. Gave them 4 instead of 5 stars because at the time I was there, there was a lot of staff turnover and a period of drama among some clients that probably could have been handled better. But their program is amazing. I highly recommend pathways if you are struggling emotionally or dealing with addiction.

I did a lot of research for months on finding the right program for me. I wanted to treat and heal all aspects of me and learn new life skills, and be able to find peace and happiness through strengthening processing and adapting to life stressors and panic attacks. After just my first month at Pathways I already feel so much stronger, better, safer and am part of a program and group with support beyond my expectations. I am thankful for every minute I have been involved in this program and look forward to continue on my new path of healing and healthy mental, emotional and physical choices. The entire staff at Pathways is easy to work with and compassionate. You feel a genuine sense of caring and loving and part of a welcoming team and family. Thank you so much Michelle and everyone at Pathways, including not only the staff, but the wonderful group of people going through the program by my side every step of the way.

Finally, a program that really works with people who truly care and have real life experiences to share. This program has changed my life, mindset and wellbeing. This is a program of caring, love and understanding. They focus on the core issues as a pathway to wellbeing and they will never give up on you. Every member of the staff will treat you like family and you will find deep lasting connection with them and other members. I have tried and failed in the past. Not this time. With the support of those involved in this program, anything is possible!
